My Happiness Project | Three Personal Commandments for 2018

Hi friends! Book Club for Babes is an online book club that I recently joined. It was started by YouTuber muchelleb and has a focus on books that inspire positive and intentional living. December’s book was The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubens. Now, I’ll admit, I didn’t actually read this one. But I did read some of the discussions and I also watched Michelle’s videos, Writing Your Own Personal Commandments and How to Actually Achieve your New Years Goals. All of these things inspired me to get my New Year organized, to write my own commandments, and to start my own happiness project—in a sense. I didn’t come up with twelve commandments or a new project for each month like Gretchen did. Instead, I came up with a theme for my year and three commandments that kind of tie into each other and that will help me achieve that theme.

While I was thinking about my individual resolutions I followed Michelle’s first step to achieving your New Years goals, and I thought about how I want to feel at the end of 2018. I found that at the end of this year I wanted to feel more ME—which led me to coming up with a theme for this year, summarized in a few words—authenticity and intention. This theme led to a crazy list of a million and one separate goals that I want to achieve this year. Which terrified me. Luckily, these goals that will help me achieve this feeling of me-ness that I’m searching for all fall into one of the three personal commandments I’ve written down.

A.K.A. turn your intentions into actions. I’m all about living an intentional life. That’s what Book Club for Babes is all about—which also happens to be the first book club I’ve EVER joined. And I don’t think that’s a coincidence. But that’s usually where my living ends—with intentions. I’m sure many of us know Maya Angelou’s famous quote: “Remember, people will judge you by your actions, not your intentions.” But I only recently heard the second part of that quote, which is the part we may not all know: “You may have a heart of gold—but so does a hard-boiled egg.” This year, I’m all about turning intention into action and turning my hard-boiled-eggy-life into a life that’s more aligned with my values.

By this, I mean to live a life that reflects my personal interests, values, and beliefs; to do so unashamedly; and to practice endurance and strive for perseverance through embarrassment and anxiety. If only I had a dollar for every time I didn’t do something or quit when I felt embarrassed. Succumbing to my often irrational anxieties has pretty much been the theme of my life and the bane of my existence—something I’m hoping to change in 2018.

This commandment ties into the first one and kind of brings everything full circle.  It’s about turning intention into action. However, I made this a separate commandment because I wanted one that focused solely on fitness. So, I guess this commandment is more about turning my couch-potato-ing into things like running and squatting.

So those are the personal commandments to which I’m dedicated to living by this year in order to achieve my goals and to feel more me by the end of 2018. I didn’t share my separate little goals, because I’m also practicing Michelle’s tip to keep your goals to yourself in order to actually achieve them. But I’d love to hear what your own personal commandments are for this year, so feel free to share them below.

  1. I LOVE your commandment to not be ashamed of your beliefs, that’s something I’m working on in 2018 ❤ my problem in 2017 was i'd see something on the Internet, and if I didn't agree I'd immediately have to find validation elsewhere on the Internet. it was tiring, I'm so glad I'm trying to leave that in 2017. AND OMG the coffee on the white sheets with the dogs!!!!!!! I have a compulsion to grab the mug before it spills LOL. ❤
