First Impressions | Storybook Cosmetics

Hi Friends! There are many things I love in life. Coffee, sweaters, slaying my enemies—just kidding. My only enemy is waking up at 5:00 am, and I’ve yet to thwart it. As you may or may not know, two things that bring me all kinds of happiness in life are sparkles and nerdy things, usually in the form of makeup and books. Lucky for me, there are people out there who want to make all of my sparkly-nerdy dreams come true. Three of those people are Erin, Mandy, and Missy Maynard, creators of Storybook Cosmetics. Makeup and books combined—what more could a girl ask for? Well, maybe a cupcake. Cupcakes never go astray.

Anyways! I recently ordered the Wizardry and Witchcraft palette and the eye brush set from Storybook Cosmetics and OH MY GOD! ALL THE BEAUTIFUL THINGS! First off, I’ll start by saying that I was pretty much guaranteed to purchase something from this brand because, I mean, books and makeup. Sold. But I’m super stoked to be able to say that their products are fabulous! If you want to see a bit of what this palette can do, I recently used four shades from this palette and three of the brushes (blending, packing, and shader) to help create a Gryffindor inspired makeup look and was not disappointed in the slightest!

ONCE UPON A TIME THERE WERE THREE SISTERS WHO NEVER STOPPED BELIEVING IN FAIRYTALES…

Ever since identical triplets Erin, Mandy and Missy Maynard were born something magical has always been part of their story. From a brief blip singing on American Idol as teenagers, to each launching their own successful online business- they are more than a triple threat. “As fangirls of all things sparkly, magical and mystical it was the logical next step to crossover our businesses into cosmetics,” said Mandy Maynard. “It’s a passion project that my sisters and I have been working on for a few years!” The passion project, Storybook Cosmetics™ went viral in October of 2016 and has the masses (and media) chomping at the bit for their magic wand-shaped makeup brushes and storybook inspired makeup. Their Wizard Wand brushes sold out immediately leaving fans wanting more.

“We’re busy creating a full-line of products at Storybook Cosmetics™ including exclusive eye-shadow palettes that come in hardcover books, liquid eyeliners, lipsticks and makeup brushes all inspired by our favorite stories,” said Missy Maynard. “We are really proud to offer a mix of both licensed collabs and products that are our own unique, original creations, inspired by all the magical stories we grew up with and loved,” said Erin Maynard. “We want to thank everyone for their patience as we perfect each product! We promise it will be worth the wait!”

Wizardry and Witchcraft Eyeshadow Palette Book:

First of all, the packaging of this palette is so beautiful and it even came in a velvet? (I’m not good at materials) pouch stamped with the company’s logo. I’m sure this is intended to store the palette in to protect it, but if you have a smaller makeup collection than I do you could definitely use it as a makeup bag or even a travel makeup bag! When you open up the palette there’s a huge mirror. I know the palette itself is a bit bulky and difficult to take anywhere, but I recently brought this on a trip with me and it actually didn’t cause any space-related issues.

Now, to the shadows themselves! I just need to say that Salem and Jinx are probably two of the most beautiful shadows I’ve ever seen! You get eleven other beautiful shades in this palette, for twelve total—three mattes, and nine shades with different levels and finish of shimmer. They are so soft and pigmented and are super blendable! There’s a white shade that’s great for all over the lid, a couple a good transition colors, and then some absolutely amazing pops of color! I’ve mostly been sticking to the more warm/neutral shades and the shade sorcerer, but I’m super excited to play around with Merlin, Potions, and Cauldron.

My ONLY beef with this palette is that there’s no Hufflepuff! Well, aside from the gold, I guess… but, to the disappointment of my black and yellow Huffle-heart, there’s no yellow. Now, this is far from a big deal. I know this is only an inspired palette and not one actually based off of Harry Potter, but we’ve got some bold rep for our Gryffindors, Ravenclaws, and Slytherins in the shades Sorcerer, Potions, and Merlin.  But no bright, buttery, smooshy Hufflepuff! I guess I’ll have to get my just and loyal and unafraid of toil somewhere else. Excuse me while I sit in a corner with my favorite Wizard Wand brush (the blending brush!), some cozy socks, and my Newt Scamander Pocket Pop! Keychain (courtesy of OwlCrate!).

*Seriously though, this palette is AWESOME!

Storybook Cosmetics Wizard Wands in the color Gun Metal:

I’ll admit it, I was fully prepared to love these regardless of the quality. I truly expected these brushes to merely be a collector’s item for me. I’ve seen reviews where people have found the brushes to be scratchy or have found that some of the hairs were out of place. But I have to say, I haven’t found any of this, and the brushes are actually amazing! They come in the same type of bag as the palette did and I’ve actually been using this one to store them in—it’s just so BEAUTIFUL! As soon as I took these brushes out of the bag I was blown away by the quality. They have a really great weight to them, they are SUPER SOFT, they pick up shadows great, and they’re just simply stunning—not to mention WIZARDS!!!

The brushes come individually wrapped. You get five brushes in this set—a liner brush, a tapered blending brush, a blending brush, a flat packing brush, and a flat shader brush. Each one of these brushes, especially the blending brushes! I use them just as much, if not more than my Firma Beauty blending brushes. They just do their blending thing and it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. The liner brush is another favorite of mine. I’ve been loving using it for my lower lash line for everyday looks because it’s hard to overdo it when using this brush. I find that the packing brush it best for highlighting the brow bone and inner corner, but I have used it to pack shimmers on the center of my lid.

Now, I will say that these products are definitely not for everyone—your money definitely goes toward the novelty aspect of the products as much as it does the quality. So, if your level of super-dork dedication isn’t on par with mine, then these products might not be for you. The price can be a bit steep since you are paying for the novelty AND the product. But, as a certified super-dork, I personally think that these products are worth the money. I LOVELOVELOVE the brushes and the palette has some amazing shades in it that I’ve been using pretty much every day since I got it. The brushes and palette are great quality and stunning—and a great prop for bookish photos! And an added bonus—these girls know their market; my order came with two beautiful bookmarks stamped with the Storybook Cosmetics logo (and for some reason I only put one of them in the photos?? Like…. just, why?????). You can just tell that so much love went into creating these products and I’m so excited for what they bring out next!
